A selection of three projects involving simultaneous luminescence spectroscopy of and application of magnetic fields to rare earth doped semiconductors will be discussed. First, the possibility of measuring ferromagnetism spectroscopically is explored. Second, peak fitting is used to show the presence of certain nonlinear effects in observed Zeeman splittings as a function of applied magnetic field strength. Finally, some properties of an unusual asymmetry in which reversing the sign of an applied magnetic field appears to change amplitudes in optical spectra are explored.
