Center for Global Islamic Studies. Demanding Azadi: Kashmiri Youth, the Indian State, and the Movement for Self-Determination. Hasfa Kanjwal,  Lafayette College

Since 2008, a new wave of youth-led resistance against the Indian state in Kashmir has emerged. This talk will focus on the multiple realms in which Kashmiri youth has registered their protest, using new technology and other means to bring awareness to the Kashmir issue. This has included a proliferation of cultural production that has crafted new discourses that —while relying on multiple, concurrent frames of reference and inspiration—is deeply connected to the desire for justice in Kashmir. It will also address how the Indian state has responded to this mobilization, and the challenges that state repression and coercion have raised for the movement for self-determination.
